Innovating without investing is simply unthinkable. This is the reason that led to the establishment of Spindox Labs in Trento, a Spindox branch entirely dedicated to R&D.

In fact, Trentino is the ideal habitat for highly specialized service industries. Technological innovation runs along the dolomitic valleys, through and throughout strategic supply chains that respect the unique environmental and natural heritage. Spindox Labs is part and parcel of this production ecosystem as an entity that was created and developed on the basis of sustainable development. Even in the international industrial research context in which we operate, the Trentino area is perceived as a never-seen-before accelerator of industrial processes. Our offices are a few steps from the Fondazione Bruno Kessler and the University of Trento. We boast a solid, multi-faceted and constantly growing team that keeps up to date with the latest examples of planning, development, and support to the implementation.

Spindox Labs is our innovation hub dedicated to technological scouting and prototyping, just a few steps from the University of Trento. Here, we design cutting-edge, innovative solutions for our clients and support them during the implementation. Furthermore, we carry out R&D projects within national and European research frameworks, together with international partners, local start-ups and university spin-offs. We boast a vast array of competencies, which are kept up to date through the adaptation of our solutions to the newest ICT trends and the cross-sectorial employment of avant-garde Artificial Intelligence techniques.

At Spindox Labs, innovation means Computer Vision, 3D modeling, IoT, Natural-Language Processing, generative AI, Data Science, and so much more. We participate to international projects on AI trustworthiness and explainability, two critical aspects for the implementation of AI into ethically aware applications.

From Computer Vision to IOT, but also 3D modeling and Natural Language Processing

We unleash our innovation power through regular, in-depth studies of the newest technologies as well as through research activities, to provide our clients with top-performing solutions.

  • Computer Vision: we employ and tailor Deep Learning techniques so that their high-performance quality is preserved when facing a multitude of necessities and restraints rising from our clients and/or from research projects – in terms of identification, classification, as well as object tracking and people tracking.
  • IoT: we employ IoT devices for indoor and outdoor object tracking, developing avant-garde solutions for the areas of logistics and safety systems. In terms of wearable sensors, we participate to international research projects aimed at supporting clinical activities that require the monitoring of vital parameters – i.e., heartbeat, saturation, and so forth – and of physical activity.
    Natural Language Processing: through applied research in the field of Natural Language processing, we create chatbots designed for complex tasks that are based on the most recent Large Language Models – the same kind of model used by ChatGPT, for example. Conversational agents are interlinked with virtual assistants and messaging platforms to provide support, assistance, and recommendations on specific domains.
    AR&VR: we develop Augmented & Virtual Reality techniques to allow clients to oversee goods, operate remotely on machinery and tools, explore public and private environments while virtual assistance services are being carried out. We continuously study new methods of AI interaction, so that such technology becomes easier to use, even for those that are less familiar with it.
    Data Science: we exploit Data Science to implement tools for monitoring, predictive maintenance, and anomaly detection within production processes or communication networks, with the possibility of extracting real-time key indicators to analyze and optimize performances.
    3D modeling: we apply photogrammetry principles to produce multiple images of the same object and/or environment to enable automated inspections or anomaly detection, both precious functions in the case of large areas or sensitive infrastructures.

Ublique© is the decision-making platform from Spindox that implements statistical and applied AI tools for simulation, prediction and optimisation of processes. Spindox Labs deals with product development and offers application maintenance services.

Spindox has a robust R&D model, likely unique in Italy. Apart from Spindox Labs, another pole dedicated to innovation is the association aHead Research ETS, which generates technological innovation for the whole Group, also thanks to strong national and European relationships with universities, research centres and start-ups.

aHead Research ETS deals with applied research to industrial processes, the discovery of new products and extreme innovation, focusing on:

  • Mathematical models for optimisation;
  • Artificial Intelligence in support to data analysis based on automated learning techniques (machine learning);
  • Simulation systems.

aHead Research ETS integrates the function “Research Centres & Universities”, which operates for the whole Group through activities that are finalised to the participation to research and innovation programs financed by the European Commission (Horizon Europe, for instance) or by the Italian Public Administration.

Sustainability coming from within

Sustainability is at home, here at Spindox. For a long time, we have been working hard to reduce the toll that our existence as a corporate reality takes on the environment. From water consumption to paper and plastic waste, we know that everything counts and that it is always possible to do better. For instance, we have adopted smart-working as a way to do good to both the environment and ourselves. Not only have we reduced the consumption related to the use of our infrastructures, but we have also introduced a way of working that adapts better to one’s own private life, making our employees happier and more enthusiastic.

Another example of the several ways in which a sustainable behaviour comes natural to us is our GO!GREEN campaign, with which we promote sustainability internally, among our people. Because one thing is clears, for us Spindoxians: sustainability does not concern big corporate projects alone, but rather needs to start from the individual people that make up our wonderful team.
From 2019, we have been collaborating with Treedom for the creation of a Spindox forest that will reduce our impact on the environment. Since then, we’ve planted 200 trees already, and we plan to reach 500 by the end of 2023.
For us it is important to create conversation and exchange ideas on sustainability in general. For this reason, we have dedicated the Green Stories section of our main website to good sustainable example coming from Italian and international startups. Our intention is that of raising awareness in the field we operate in, so that better practices will lead to a technological advancement of which we will all be able to benefit.

I spent most of my career in the consulting area, gaining experience in consulting firm, system integration and product companies. After my last adventure abroad, in contact with customers and colleagues from all over Europe, I joined the other Spindox shareholders during the management buyout operation, about 10 years ago. Since then, I had the pleasure of contributing to several key steps for the growth of the Group, including the creation of Spindox Labs.

After graduating at the university of Trento, one of the most important innovation and research centres for ICT in Italy, Cristiano Carlevaro worked in several local software houses, developing Android and Java technologies.
At the age of 26, he started working as a software developer for Spindox. This time, it was in Maranello, hometown of the Ferrari supercars and the Formula One, and close to the Maserati and Lamborghini factories.
Over the course of four years, he became a technical project lead and finally a project manager.
In 2016, he embarked on the creation of Spindox Labs with other colleagues and was chosen as a Managing Director. He was only 31.
